What are two tips you would give an aspiring creative starting their own business?

NM

There’s more to running a creative business than just making beautiful things and assuming they’ll sell. You have to make sure that the market exists and will sustain your business. Understand the marketplace for your work before you start. A simple business plan can be teased out under the headings WHO, WHAT, WHEN, HOW and WHY. Who are your customers (and WHERE are they)? WHAT is your business about and WHAT are you selling? Timeline your strategies for operation, production and marketing (WHEN), work out your operational and distribution systems (HOW) and analyse the needs and trends in the marketplace for what you do (WHY). If all of that looks “do-able” then it’s time to start analysing the financial feasibility…

And...

Understand what makes your work – or the way that you present it – different from your competitors. Why would people want to buy from YOU rather than someone else? What intangible benefits are you ALSO selling? Make sure you communicate your uniqueness – especially those intangible benefits - to your customers through your marketing, packaging, web presence, customer service and the overall “look and feel” of your business. Don’t be too shy or subtle in putting the message out – it may not be as obvious to others as it is to you.
