Donning a headpiece with confidence can up your charisma levels – just look at Isabella Blow’s legacy – and perhaps most importantly, stave off sunburn, sunspots and crows feet. If everyone warmed to hats beyond the few weeks of the Spring Racing Carnival, the world would probably be a whole lot more fun. Last month we challenged our competitive crafters to whip up a hat out of any material, as long as the project cost less than AUD$5. We’re thrilled to announce our first international winner, Edinburgh native Nathalie Cortada, whose “little French pixie hat” ticked all the judges’ boxes – good looks, versatility, and eco-friendliness. We were particularly impressed with Nathalie’s frugal efforts – not only did she salvage discarded newspapers, but she only used copies of the Metro, a FREE newspaper that is available on Edinburgh’s local buses. “The whole hat is knotted and I used no glue, nothing other than strips of free newspaper so it cost me nothing to make,” Nathalie said. “I used no tools other than my hands.” Nathalie said the “cheeky yet elegant” shape of the hat allowed it to be worn at least two different ways, depending on the wearer’s mood. We were impressed Nathalie ventured out of her sewing room to photograph her handiwork. She informs us the photo was taken near Craigmillar Castle just a few hundred metres from Little France in Edinburgh. “While we were taking the photographs the local buzzard circled above us crying its approval,” Nathalie said. Nathalie wins a $150 voucher to spend on whatever she likes, and a feature in our Creative Genius section. |

Bringing creative minds together. Do you remember what it was like to communicate before the days of email and text messages? Do you remember how exciting it was to receive a card or letter in the post? This month’s competition is all about sharing your creativity and staying in touch. Giving something handmade is one of the simplest and most affordable gestures – and one of the most revered. To make something by hand is to take the time to create something unique, with thought and care. But in our timepoor society this is becoming increasingly rare; and as a result, even more valued. This month we would like you to create a postcard that illustrates your individual creativity. It should communicate to your friends and family what you’ve been up to in the world of creativity and/or serve as an invitation to a creative get-together. The postcard needs to be 10.5cm x 15.5cm in size and made from 300 GSM card but if you’d prefer you can design your postcard digitally. You can use any medium you like to illustrate it. Some examples include: collage, paint, pencil, photography or graphic design software. The prize will go to the most creative entry, which will also be featured on the Living Creatively website.
Simply email community@livingcreatively.com.au two or three images of your postcard, along with a brief description of what you aimed to communicate. Please include your name, phone number and email address. If you have time to tell us, we’d love to hear a bit about the making of your postcard and why you chose the technique you did. Everyone has their own reason for choosing techniques and we’d love to hear them.
Absolutely! We’re looking for as many postcards as we can find. How else can we choose the very best?
The creation must be your original design and no one else’s. It’s only fair. It must be handmade; that is, you spent time creating it from scratch. Handmade means it can be sewn using a sewing machine, crocheted, knitted or drawn etc.
We’re looking for a handmade postcard that communicates a sense of sharing and community within the craft world. Your postcard should tell people what you’ve been up to, creatively speaking, and/or serve as an invitation to a creative get-together with fellow crafters. The winning entry will be judged on originality and style as well as how creatively it conveys these messages.
We’ll email you, so be sure to give us your email address. If you don’t have one, that’s okay – just let us know the best phone number we can reach you on to give you the good news.
Your name in lights… the winner’s creation will be featured on the Living Creatively website in our Competitively Creative section. You’ll also win a AUS $150 to use on anything you like.
Sure, just email your question(s) to community@livingcreatively.com.au and we’ll get straight onto it. Chances are everyone else would like to know too.
